Harriet Harman is urging Schwarzenegger to 'terminate' prostitute website.

The website is Punternet where escorts are listed on the database, and where you can find reviews.

The Labour deputy leader told delegates at the Labour conference: "There is now a website… where pimps put women on sale for sex and then men who've had sex with them put their comments online. It is PunterNet and fuels the demand for prostitutes."

Harman said the site was based in California but had "pages and pages" of women for sale in London.

"I've raised it with the US ambassador to London and I've called on California's governor, Arnie Schwarzenegger, to close it down."

Harman said it should not be difficult for the star to "terminate PunterNet".

"And I've got news for him: if he doesn't, I'll be back," she quipped

So G, watch out you could be terminated.

I went away for a few days, as you know. I got a call from a friend this afternoon alerting me to a nasty post on Punternet about me.

Some individual who calls him or herself Rockenroll, and claims to have seen me in 2005, had this to say

The pictures are fake (and not even of the same person). She is a nice person and gives a good service, but is a long way from the pictures.

I don't know who this individual is. I have worked as an escort since 2005, and have an internet presence. I am aware that anyone who has a presence on the internet, can expect someone to say something about them, at some point.

This person needs to get his or her facts straight. I have several reviews on Punternet by multiple reviewers, who are respected.

Surely if I was using fake pictures, they would have pointed this out, right?

It would be really useful for me to know whose photos RockenRoll believes I am using. I posess the CDs and prints for all my photoshoots, and do not have a twin.

I have shared my views on messageboard dynamics, and the things that some individuals will do. As I said before, some of these people have deep rooted issues, and by attacking others, they get some sense of gratification and recognition.My view is that some members of these boards have a strong need to control and dominate, and bring their unresolved issues of omnipotence, onto messageboards, and start acting out.

I no longer read messageboards regularly ,as I am bored with the content. I do not have the time or energy to engage with individuals who suffer from delusions of grandeur.

As Peridot Ash points out, there will always be people on messageboards who will flame escorts.

Escorts have to be careful what they say, or they attract the wrong types. It only takes one totally insecure, fucked-up prick out there, name and location unknown to the “community,” who would love to teach an uppity bitch whore who says something he doesn’t agree with on a message board a nice little lesson in person. And she’d never know if it was jerkoff69 or Schlongbooger or DaddyButtFuck or whoever from the message board.

An escort friend who had a high profile, and has retired this year, had a false review written about her. She could not figure out who had written the review, and years after the review was posted, it became clear that the reviewer was another escort. Yes, another escort, who was a close friend of hers. The site owner removed the review.This is a cut throat business.

Rockenroll could be another escort, for all I know.

As Jenny de Milo points out Selling your sisters out = bad. Times are tough for some escorts out there, the credit crunch has hit them hard, and some escorts feel that there is not enough room for everyone to eat. This is the nature of the industry, and some escorts will hit out at others, who they believe are threatening their business. Or they get their pimps to do it for them.

This can be a very dangerous business and there are very angry men who have very serious issues with women who gravitate towards it.

Okay, so this guy or girl says that I have fake photos.

How have I survived in this business with fake photos for four years?

I have some clients and regulars who have found me via Punternet, but that is not where I get the bulk of my work from.

This guy or girl, wrote me a mediocre review a number of years ago in 2005, and strangely enough I got a lot of work on the back of that review. Some clients chose to come and see me out of idle curiousity,some thought the review was bollocks, and others liked my rebuttal.

The reality is that most clients do not read messageboards or reviews, so as an escort do not despair. It is hard for newbies to take this on board, but in time you will realise, that work comes in from various sources, and most people who will book you, make up their own minds.

There will always be sad bastards out there, but there are good guys too.

The Daily mail has issues with Penguin. They say that Penguin are rushing out memoirs portraying prostitution as a glamorous lifestyle choice.

The head of the Metropolitan Police Clubs and Vice Unit estimates that at least 75 per cent of prostitutes working in London are foreign - and that as many as 14,000 women from across the world are working in the sex trade in Britain.

Now we switch to a smart drawing room where the latest bestseller is being discussed by keen readers in their trendy book club.

A stream of so-called Happy Hooker memoirs are spewing out of Grub Street and you won't find a trafficked woman in one of them.

What you will find are salacious confessionals by middle-class hooker hacks motivated as much by celebrity as acclaim among the literati.

We've had a clever girl slumming it with Belle de Jour, who led the way with her blog-turned-book The Intimate Adventures Of A London Call Girl, in which she chatted about her punters, lingerie and writing ambitions.

We've had desperate housewives, such as Dawn Annandale, who revealed in Call Me Elizabeth that she would rather sleep with men to pay the school fees than send her kids to the local comprehensive.

Of course, Aneta's is not a story you will find in the raft of prostitutes' memoirs being pumped out by publishers hellbent on peddling the myth that the Oldest Profession is a path to glamour and eroticism for a certain type of woman.

As the bodies of the brutally murdered prostitutes were being found around Ipswich last December, nubile Brazilian Bruna Surfistinha published Scorpion's Sweet Venom: Diary of A Brazilian Call Girl in the UK.

At 17, Bruna is only two years younger than Tania Nicol, the Ipswich Strangler's youngest victim, but how different are their lives.

Poor little rich girl Bruna decided the best way to upset Mum and Dad wasn't to dye her hair green but go on the game, though she calculated: "If I am going to be a prostitute, I don't want to be a run-of-the-mill one." Bully for her: at least she had a choice.

As Aneta and the Ipswich Five demonstrate, what Surfistinha contemptuously regards as "run-of-the-mill prostitutes" are women who live horrible, degraded lives, and whose freedom of choice is stolen with their passports and the descent into addiction the first time they are given crack cocaine by their pimps.

Not that stark reality penetrates publishers' minds.

This summer another author, the seductively named Miss S, joins Bruna and Belle in bookshops with Kinky Confessions Of A Working Girl.

Her editor Katy Follain, of that august publishing house Penguin, proudly proclaims Miss S is "one of London's top five escorts".

How she knows this is a mystery. Is there a FTSE for hookers? The Floosie 100, perhaps?

In an astonishing letter to promote Kinky Confessions, Follain writes that the book is an 'intimate diary' of Miss S's first year in a brothel, aged 21.

She took the job after a vacancy opened in her local massage parlour. Miss S likes the work so much she now runs her own business - whether it employs trafficked women, Follain omits to mention.

She does reveal: "This is her chosen career - she does it because she loves it, and her attitude to sex is empowering, fun and refreshing."

The book, Follain gushes, "will undoubtedly appeal to both curious teenage girls as well as bored housewives".

Teenage girls? What on earth is she thinking?

"Kinky Confessions stands out from the other sex memoirs," she burbles, "because everything in it is absolutely authentic, and will have huge credibility."

Not with me. If you want authenticity, consider that, according to the police, women in brothels are forced to service between 20 and 30 clients a day.

This is the reality of the vice trade, not books like Handy Hints for Hookers, Callgirl: Confessions of an Ivy League Lady of Pleasure, Diary of a Manhattan Call Girl or Concertina: The Life and Loves of a Dominatrix. It is far from the image promoted by the publishers of those literary offerings.

While Belle, Bruna and Miss S emphasise their freedom of choice, most sex workers are no more than slaves and there is nothing glamorous about the world they inhabit.

By peddling the myth of the middle-class call girl, these books perpetuate the insidious idea that inside every young girl and suburban housewife is a woman who regards sex as a commodity to sell.

What these memoirs also fail to acknowledge is the uncomfortable relationship between prostitution and paedophilia.

Belle and Co may be legal, but according to the Home Office as many as 75 per cent of all prostitutes begin their involvement in the trade well before their 18th birthday.

Many start as young as 12 after falling in with bad crowds - the average age of girls being pimped by young hustlers is 14 to 17.

Of the 84 trafficked women rescued from brothels in Operation Pentameter last year, 12 were under 17, some only 14.

Child prostitution is getting worse. From Gatwick to Glasgow, charities report a sharp rise in child abductions from care homes. Once snatched, the children are either trafficked abroad or forced to work in brothels here.

Up to 5,000 children are working as sex slaves in the UK, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation claims. As well as child exploitation, a disproportionate number of sex workers suffered appalling violence and sexual abuse as children, which was a significant factor in leading them into the vice trade.

The Home Office reports as many as 85 per cent of prostitutes suffered physical abuse as children, while 45 per cent were victims of sex abuse.

One woman, Severine, who works as an erotic masseuse, contacted me when I was researching this subject to say: "I did have a childhood that most people would consider emotionally abusive. I don't know if that's why I became a sex worker or not. It was probably part of it."

Severine's acknowledgement is borne out by other prostitutes and ex-sex workers I have met. A few years ago, a room mate of mine was a bright, sassy girl, who admitted to me she'd been a prostitute. She had also suffered horrific abuse.

Aged seven, she was raped on her way home from school. When she was 13 she was gang raped. Her parents were going through a nasty divorce, so rather than turn to them for help, she ran away.

On the streets prostitution was not her 'choice', it was her means of survival and memories of what she went through at the hands of punters haunted her into adulthood.

As a volunteer on the streets, I helped out with a welfare charity and discovered my friend's story was all too familiar.

None of the prostitutes I met had enjoyed happy, secure childhoods free from fear or abuse.

For girls not forced to sell sex by traffickers, heroin has proved the slave driver, as the victims of the Ipswich Strangler exemplify. The Home Office reports that 87 per cent of women involved in street-based prostitution use the drug.

Not a picture you find in the pages of Miss S and her bookish sisters.

Nor is the violence meted out to prostitutes reflected in these vice memoirs - Dawn Annandale alludes to one nasty incident, but it is nothing compared to the beatings meted out by pimps and punters most street girls experience.

Instead of the grim reality, we are peddled the tales of Bruna, Belle, Miss S et al, ready to spill their socalled secrets in return for a fat advance from publishers too busy reading their blogs to bother finding out what really happens in the vice trade.

Publishers who sell this nonsense claim it 'empowers' us girls, showing women sex workers in control of their sexuality and enjoying the work. If it's such a good job, why don't these publishers recommend their daughters take it up?

And if it is such great work then why do brothels use trafficked women to fill vacancies?

Because vice is not nice, which is why women do not choose it as a career.

The image of prostitution these writers promote is utter rubbish, a lie propagated about a profession that relies on coercion, rape, violence and drug addiction to recruit its workers.

For the sake of Aneta, my friend and the victims of the Ipswich Strangler, as well as the 5,000 child sex slaves working in Britain, it is about time publishers dug a little deeper when dealing with the Oldest Profession and stopped trying to sell us this pernicious nonsense.

I agree that there are not that many books about trafficked women available.

I wonder whether that is because they do not sell that well?

I feel strongly about trafficked women, but does Danuta Kean feel that Penguin have a moral responsibility to educate the public about the issue?

What Danuta may not be aware of, is that some people who are traumatised, do not want to share their stories. They want to forget what they can,as soon as possible. Recalling or reliving the events, can cause a secondary trauma .So sharing your story, is not always therapeutic.

I have read Dawn Annandale's book Call me Elizabeth and I do not recall it being fluffy. The Daily Mail claim that the violent incident that Dawn mentions in her book, is nothing compared to what happens to streetgirls.

My understanding is that Dawn and Belle de Jour,who I have also read, write about their experiences.

Can they be blamed for not mentioning trafficked women in their memoirs?

They are free to write what they like, and what they experience, in my view.

I think what Danuta Kean fails to realise, is that what is happening in the publishing world, is no different to what happens on punter messageboards, and in the blogosphere.

How many threads do you see about trafficking on messageboards?

Miss S, is quoted as one of London's top five escorts, and Danuta Kean wonders whether there is a FTSE for hookers.

Well she needs to look at the charts on Punternet and Captain 69. Unfortunately, ratings are part and parcel of the industry. Some men are influenced, by these charts.

Danuta Kean, feels that these memoirs do not acknowledge the uncomfortable relationship between paedophilia and prostitution. There is a possiblity that the writers do not believe there is a link.

I agree with Danuta Kean.Trafficking is an uncomfortable issue that some people do not want to think about. The fact is it will not go away, and trafficked woman do not have a choice. I also do not believe that prostitution is a path to glamour.

Compartments has a comprehensive post on Escort Reviews how important are they. She raises a number of important points about whether they are helpful or hurt, and the sinister side to reviews.

What was also raised was the corruption of board owners who exploit newbies.
This happens in London, too. Word gets round fast on who to avoid.This is not necessarily information that you can pick up on escort only boards, but via escorts that you are in contact with.As Compartments points out, some clients blackmail escorts, and threaten to write negative reviews if they do not provide a discount, or certain type of service.

I agree with Compartments. It is important to remember that not all clients know that review sites exist, or even bother with them. However, they can help your business. The increasing number of women who are involved in bait and switch, makes some clients wary, and why not, as they are spending large amounts of money. So having a review, I believe gives an escort credibility.

It can become complex when escorts provide X to a chosen few, who then betray their confidence, and write about it. I read this on a messageboard on my weekly catch up, and members could not understand how this client stated that the escort had provided X. Why had they not been given the same treatment, these men were puzzled. Clearly an escort has a right to do as she pleases, with whoever she pleases. I guess the reviewer wanted to show the other members that he was the special guy.

I have a friend who was a victim of a hate campaign last year, and had a string of malicious reviews, which were all deleted. I believe that the negative publicity did not affect her business in any way. If anything, it drove more traffic to her site, her phone was still ringing off the hook, and her workload did not decrease.

Clients have told me that having a few negative reviews,is not harmful. This gives the impression that the positive reviews that you have are not fake.

There are a number of pimps, insecure escorts, and disgruntled clients out there, who make it their business to write these types of reviews. In some cases these types of reviews can kill an escort's business, if she does not have a high profile, or only relies on review sites. If she markets herself widely, it does not make a difference.

The other issue, is that escorts are reinventing themselves all the time. In fact there are a number of escorts who have multiple sites, and the clients are none the wiser. On Captain 69, there is a facility on the review form, where a client can report an escort who has a number of aliases, or who used to work under a different name.

On Punternet, if you think your reviews are malicious, you can contact Galahad who will investigate, and they will be removed. There are some individuals who have a knack of having any review that is negative removed. So the system is not foolproof.

There is the whole issue of graphic vs non graphic reviews. I have to say when I discovered that reviews existed, I was stunned and fascinated. I could not believe that clients put pen to paper after an encounter. There is a school of thought that believes that a true gentleman would not write a review. I do not feel I can censor what a client writes about me. If he chooses to review, he writes what he likes. So, I have no control about whether the content is graphic or not.

Some escorts ask clients for reviews, and some offer discounts to clients who write reviews.

Chevalier has an interesting post on the accuracy of reviews in his post on belief vs scepticism.

He has another post discussing escorts who say they do not want reviews here. He makes an interesting point about how escorts who say they do not want reviews would rather rely on word of mouth advertising. His point is that reviews are word of mouth advertising.

What I have observed recently is escorts who are high profile, and have multiple reviews, asking new clients to not review them. Similar to the issues that I raised in the happiness,luxuries and necessities post.

I believe that reviews are a necessary evil. I have picked up from messageboards and clients that without them, you could be perceived as having something to hide if you say you do not want reviews, by some clients.

I have had a number of clients who stated they would not have seen me, without them.

An escort can still get work without them, the question is how much of a difference does it make to your business when you do have them?

It is a business at the end of the day,whichever way you choose to look at it.

In a smart boutique displaying an array of miniskirts and skimpy tops, the shopkeeper was too busy attending to his female customers to listen to a sermon on HIV/Aids. "I don't know anything about it at all. Come back after I've finished with my customers," he told the volunteer health education worker.

In the Qaem mall in north Tehran's affluent Tajrish district, where two floors are dedicated to women's fashion, several shopkeepers admitted to first-hand experience of receiving offers of sex. Arash, 23, said he had been propositioned 40 or 50 times in his store. "I reckon that 50% of shopkeepers have accepted sex in return for clothes," he said.

Ahmed Reza, 23, admitted having accepted such offers. "I was sitting outside the shop when two women came and said they wanted to try various manteaus [overcoats]," he said. "They asked for a bargain and I offered them the standard discount. But they said, 'We cannot pay that - if you give us a good discount and your mobile number, we will serve you'. So I gave them more discount and got their mobile numbers.

"I can tell a prostitute by their attitudes and body language. When she asks the price of something, I say it's much more than it really is. Then I reduce it when she asks for discount, so she think she's getting a great bargain and offers sex."

I have come across some interesting posts by other bloggers regarding escorts advertising on the internet versus paper advertising.

LA Player has an intersting post on Price,Law and sex travel.

His post mentions that it is cheaper to advertise in the paper, where he is. This is not the case in the UK. Conversations that I have had with other escorts who advertise in papers, or magazines in London, prove that they spend more money on their advertising.

You pay X pounds to advertise on Eros per month. If I was to put an ad in my local paper it would cost me three times what I would pay for an Eros ad. The same applies to topshelf magazines. When the Herald Tribune ran ads, that was pretty expensive too, but the advertising was worth it. There are other magazines that are just as pricey. A friend had given me the name of a magazine that she used, that had rates that were in line with internet based sites. It did not work for me, but then I only advertised there for two months. I think the women who advertise in papers or magazines, are trying to cover all bases, and clearly not all clients look on the internet. The internet is easier for me. My friends who advertise in papers have hundreds, and I mean hundreds of calls per day. I could not deal with this. Their rates tend to be lower, in most cases, however they are busy. I believe you get more exposure on the internet. I am happy with internet advertising.

Note that they do not mention any paper advertising. The cost of advertising on Punternet is very cheap and as they are the largest, most well known site in the UK, they send lots of traffic to anyone who advertises on there. On Captain 69, you pay for yearly membership, which is reasonable, and you can advertise on there.

I know that it works for some escorts, but it is not a form of advertising that I want to use, as I am happy with what I do. As I said, the volume of calls is a major deterrent for me. I think there are also limitations on what you can put in your ads.

I read this story yesterday, and have so much respect for what Oprah Winfrey does.

I had a conversation with another escort yesterday which I found really disturbing. Her identity, and address were posted on a messageboard, by another member.She has decided to leave the industry as a result.

I find the whole messageboard culture, fascinating and sickening. The first messageboard that I ever came across was the Punternet messageboard, which no longer exists.. I think it went down as a result of flame wars, allegations, accusations, and identities being revealed.

I think for someone who is new to the industry messageboards can give you some insight into what happens. I found some useful information on there, from other escorts, and the warning boards are useful too. I have also made contact with other escorts via the messageboards.

There is another side, that I find disturbing. The trolls, and the people who go into attack mode, for no reason, and resort to destroying lives. I have read about information being painted on front doors, tracking down members at work, and leaving threats,visits to schools, and it goes on and on and on.

There was an article in the Guardian on Monday about Celebrity Untouchables. It talked about how there is a law for some celebrities, and another for the rest of us. The idea of living a life beyond accountability and judgement might be many people's idea of heaven on earth, and this explains why large numbers of ordinary folk continue to crave celebrity.

Celebrities exist on the various messageboards, and you can see that they are able to do and say things that other members cannot get away with.Moderation on some boards is a joke.Some posts that are offensive, are allowed to stand on boards,well logically if a post is left to stand then it conforms to what the board owner wants or is happy to be posted.

I resent the fact that some people feel that they have the right to endanger lives. There is a lot of bullying that takes place on boards, and the people who dish out, are rarely able to take what is thrown at them.

I wonder whether anyone has done any research on messageboard culture on the internet?

I belong to other forums that have nothing to do with this industry, and the dynamics are similar, so I wonder whether it is just how some people behave, and are programmed, it is part of their nature.

I wonder whether the sense of gratification, and recognition that they get by behaving in this way, is important to them?

I think for the individuals who have been victims of these campaigns on messageboards, it is devastating, and ruins their lives. It sickens me, and saddens me, and I feel for anyone out there who has been on the receiving end of this behaviour.

My view is most of the people who carry out these attacks have major issues that they need to take to a therapist, but they are in so much denial that they believe they do not have issues.

A friend who I met via a messageboard said to me , a message board is a dictatorship, within any dictatorship any rules are merely the current whim of the dictator, because it is a dictatorship then any and all rules are there to be obeyed or ignored at the whim of the dictator thus rendering them useless, which in actual fact they are, if the rules were set in stone and enforced then that would reduce the power of the dictator.

It seems to be a universal problem.

I read this article in the Economist and wondered what the parallels were in this industry.

Swarm intelligence can be used to influence what shoppers buy. The article looks at adaptive behaviour and how by using certain technology you can encourage people to buy more, by playing on the herd instinct. The idea is that, if a certain item is seen to be popular, shoppers are likely to choose it too. The challenge is to keep customers informed about what others are buying.

On Punternet there is a chart of ladies with more than 20 reviews.

Some clients look at these charts, and feel safer seeing escorts who have multiple reviews.

Captain 69 has a top twenty chart, but it is based on favourites, rather than number of reviews, and is not something that should be taken seriously. Members submit their favourites, and they appear on the chart. You could submit a favourite, and they appear half way up the chart.

I have read so many different views on this. Some clients prefer to see escorts who have multiple reviews, as they feel they will not be ripped off. They tend to follow reviewers who they feel have similar interests. Some clients avoid escorts who have multiple reviews, as they feel that they are conveyor belts, irrespective of the rates that the escort charges.You have escorts who are considered high end, who have 100 plus reviews. Some clients are not bothered about the reviews at all.

I have found that some of my clients have only come to see me because I have reviews, and would not have bothered if I did not. They would not have taken the risk. I have mixed feelings about this way of thinking, and yet I appreciate if you are spending a certain amount of money, you want to feel that you are getting what is advertised. I think reviews can make a difference, but not that much of a difference.

I wonder whether any escorts out there feel that their business has changed as a result of reviews?

I wonder how many men out there follow these charts?

The review sites seem to make money, so something must be working.

I do not understand why men call up and say they want details. I raised this issue last year on the Punternet message board which is now defunct.

What is the thinking behind calling and asking for questions that are already on my website?

I have heard all the arguments for this.

Some men say they just had a quick glance at the site, and took down the number. They want to sound you out over the telephone. They want to know what to expect. Well that is covered in the reviews fully, and if you do not see what you are looking for, then take it, that it is not available.

I had a conversation with someone a while ago. He was unable to elicit a certain type of response from me. The conversation went along these lines.

"Do you Provide X?"
"Yup."
"Really?"
"Yup." I do not but was onto him.
"Do you see men who are Black,Asian or Oriental?"
"Yes." I wonder whether he is all three.
"Can I be rough with you?"
"Yup" Of course not, I am just playing along.
" I am 6ft 9in and well endowed, is that a problem?"
"No, all my boyfriends have been larger than you."

Surprise, surprise, the conversation ended suddenly. I think my last response rattled his concept of himself.

I am aware that there are genuine callers out there, wankers and timewasters. Yes, this all goes with the territory. I am not opposed to answering questions; however there are some questions that I will not answer. The details questions is one of them, and anyone who asks this question will be referred to my website.

I know some escorts have receptionists,or an answering service to deal with these types of callers.I think it is a good idea, and weeds out the timewasters, however I tend to like to know who I am talking to. I think the details question may be appropriate in a parlour, that may not have a site, where you can enquire who is working, stats, what is and is not provided.

A straightforward approach, asking for an appointment without going into detail of the service or the price, is considered a genuine request. Polite language and a respectful tone suggest the caller is safe enough to move on to another stage."

I agree with all her points. This is my perspective based on my experiences. I do answer some questions, but definitely not the details question.
