Archbishop Hickey urges MPs to oppose the brothel bill in Western Australia.

He states that " There is considerable research evidence to show that males, and particularly young males, who use prostitutes have greater tendencies towards domination of women and violence towards them."

I have just finished Confessions of a Working Girl

Miss S is one of the authors that Danuta Kean refers to in her happy hooker memoirs which I talked about here.

This book does not glamourise prostitution at all, in my view. Yes, Miss S chose to work in a brothel or parlour, but some of her experiences are so offputting, I think anyone who is thinking of working in a brothel needs to read this.

Miss S talks about how by the eighth client she is swollen, by the tenth she is raw, and when she gets to client 12 she is numb. What I found amazing, was that it was a sackable offence if the girls gave their number out, provided owo, or anal. The girls did not kiss either.

The market has changed so much now, I wonder when Miss S was working at this brothel, and whether their policies remain the same now.

She describes various experiences of bad and difficult clients who pull off condoms, or are too rough.She has one incident with a chinese client who does this, and talks of the stress she goes through, waiting for her results.

The local coppers have something on their bulletin board, saying the brothel is the cleanest and safest house in the area, and is the only one they can use, which is hilarious.

There are countless women who cannot deal with the job psychologically, when they have condom splits with clients.

She has some tips at the back, which I think would be useful for newbies. One thing that I agree with is her point about regulars. She says when a regular client sees another girl, all it means is he fancies a change.

It does not mean the girl has stolen him, or he does not like you. Your punter is not your boyfriend, so do not take it personally.

I read the book, and take my hat off to Miss S. Some of the stuff she went through was awful. It is an easy read, and an eye opener for working in a brothel or parlour.

Danuta Kean says that Miss S's publisher claimed this book will appeal to teenage girls. I am with Danuta on that, I cannot see how and why it would appeal to teenage girls.

Miss S does touch on some of her clients who may be paedophiles, which is something that Danuta Kean feels the book fails to acknowledge. Miss S, gives a number of accounts of clients who talk to her about this, and the alarm bells that go off for her. I think the book is authentic, and although Miss S made some money, this would not go down in my list of books that glamourise the profession.

Tal Zohar was arrested in Israel for the escort agency he ran on the internet. The charges were for trafficking, pimping and exploitation. He cheated some of the girls of their wages. Israeli law enforcement seldom convicts pimps who operate virtual brothels or escort agencies.

The Hotline for Migrant Workers last month submitted a bill to the Knesset Subcommittee on Trafficking in Women, to amend the wording of the existing law prohibiting the operation of a business involved in prostitution to include virtual brothels.

The traffickers in women do their homework, learn the market and keep up to date. The law must also be updated. The law's current format allows for the trial of a person who operates a virtual brothel, but the proposed amendment stresses the severity of this type of whorehouse."

"The proposed amendment also states that not only are the owners or operators of a virtual brothel accountable to the law, but also the graphic artist and the site's content editor.

"This determination has a foundation in the existing law, according to which not only the operator of a regular brothel is liable, but also the cashier, the driver and the guard."

"It doesn't matter if you are only a graphics geek who once set up a site. If the woman you advertised is a victim of human trafficking, you must be accountable," says Levenkron.

I wonder how the escort webmasters and escort photographers, are able to verify that the escorts they do work for are not trafficked?

Plans to open what may be Canada's first co-op brothel was sparked by a report that documented severe working conditions for Vancouver's licensed escorts.

The report, put together by a group of Vancouver escorts, shows many escorts feel endangered by unsafe working conditions. Some escorts reported being told by their employers that the use of condoms during sex was "up to the customer."

How their employers can put these demands on their escorts is outrageous.To make matters worse, they get fined or punished if they do not comply. Fortunately some of the escorts feel that they do not have to put up with this. The escort agencies that encourage this behaviour are licensed.

This article reinforces why being an independent escort is safest. I am concerned about the women that feel they need to engage in unsafe working conditions.I find it unsettling that this still goes on in this day and age.

Father Gerry Nugent is using the same lines as Randall Tobias. He claims he took prostitutes back to his church but only for sexual fumblings.

He said: "Yes, there were times when I used prostitutes. God, it was about November 2005 when I was back drinking. I was on a real low at the time.

"I took prostitutes back to the church on two separate occasions. It was because I was drinking. I didn't know what I wanted. I didn't even have sex with them. It was more of a sexual fumble."

Amazingly, Nugent alleged that Archbishop Conti's predecessor, the late Cardinal Winning, knew about his weakness for women and offered his support. The priest said: "He was superb. He said to me: 'Gerry, I am concerned about you.' He was compassionate. He was very helpful.

"When I spoke to him about the issues, he promised: 'This is just between you and I, Gerry'."

The Church has reacted to the scandal by effectively sacking him and attempting to make sure he never works anywhere else as a priest.

Malcolm Savidge, the Labour MP for Aberdeen North, who was actively involved in representing victims of abuse at the city's Nazareth House Catholic children's home, said the Church should re-examine its policies for dealing with priests such as Father Nugent.

"Trying to look after the reputation of the Church, rather than the welfare of people, simply leads to the Church being brought into even greater disrepute in the longer term," he said.

MSP Margaret Mitchell, the Scottish Conservatives' former justice spokeswoman at Holyrood, said the Church should look at how Nugent was able to have such a different public persona to his private life without senior clerics knowing. "The Church needs to look at the whole issue," she said.

Then we have David Lee Miller Jr., 43, a former crime scene investigator, defensive tactics instructor who assisted two brothels.

A former Sunnyvale police officer was sentenced Monday to a year and a day in federal prison for helping two brothels avoid police raids, find fleeing prostitutes and collect tens of thousands of dollars in bogus immigration fees from employees who were illegal immigrants.

David Lee Miller Jr., 43, a former crime scene investigator, defensive tactics instructor and longtime SWAT team member with the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety, pleaded guilty in January 2005 to two counts of conspiracy to commit extortion.

At a hearing Monday in San Jose, when U.S. District Judge James Ware asked Miller if he had anything to say, he said in a barely audible voice, "I think I'll be sick if I talk." Miller declined comment afterward.

Miller, a Sunnyvale officer for 15 years, was arrested for his part in a scheme to smuggle women from Korea to the United States, charge them tens of thousands of dollars for the trip and then force them to work as prostitutes at the two South Bay brothels until the debt was repaid.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeff Nedrow said Monday that Miller jeopardized the safety of his colleagues when he alerted brothels to impending raids. Miller also helped recover women who fled their debt and the sex trade, authorities said.

Crystal Palace owners employed Miller, paying him in cash and sex, and would contact him at the main Sunnyvale switchboard or through his personal cellular phone. Miller accompanied club owners to Hawaii and Las Vegas to find women who had fled their debt, Nedrow said.

But Miller's attorney, Paul Meltzer, said his client had already been punished because he has lost his job, his wife has divorced him and his reputation has been ruined.

Deena Edridge is the first woman to go to jail for organising prostitution. It is amazing, given the numbers of women who are jailed in the UK and USA, for the same crime.

She also pleaded guilty to organising prostitution and controlling the activities of more than one prostitute for that purpose between the same dates.

The 28-year-old former prostitute was paid a salary of €50,000 to act as a "manager", greeting customers, lining up the girls to allow customers to choose one, handling finances and managing an off-site "call centre".

Judge Katherine Delahunt told Edridge: "You are in many ways a victim and fell into an illegal trade because of abandonment by your father."

She noted however that Edridge was a "major player who had a significant and trusted role in running the business" and imposed two twelve month sentences, to run concurrently.

Det. Sgt Holohan said the business was advertised through web sites and magazines under the guise of 17 different escort agencies.

Customers rang the mobile phone number in the advertisement and were directed to the brothel. All the mobiles were "prepay" or "ready to go" numbers across all networks which could not be traced.

These records allowed gardaí to quantify the brothel’s turnover. He estimated that takings over the four shifts prior to the garda search had been €22,000 and the annual takings were thought to be about €4m.

Det Sgt Holohan said that 35 mobile phones had been found during a search of another premises at Beresford House in the IFSC which operated as a "call centre" for Bachelor’s Walk. He said 32 of these were switched on and being answered by two women employed as "receptionists", directing customers to the brothel.

Det. Sgt Holohan described the prostitution industry as "extremely reliant on mobile phones" and said within two days 14 numbers used by the seized phones were back up and running.

Ms Marie Torrens BL, defending Edridge, said that her client was originally from the UK and had come to Ireland five years ago. She said her client had suffered greatly as a child as a result of her parents’ divorce.

She said both parents had subsequently remarried and Edridge’s father "threw money" at her, allowing her to "live a high life style" until she was 18 and at which point the financial aid ceased, leaving her with a number of credit card debts.

She attempted to take out a loan but got into debt again and answered an advertisement in a newspaper to work as a prostitute.

Ms Torrens said Edridge had been robbed and had a number of frightening experiences working as a prostitute. She was initially employed to answer the phones for the business but took full responsibility for the offences with which she was charged.

She was a former prostitute herself. Some women in the industry go on to run agencies or brothels when they retire, it seems to be the next step.
